Artist Statement: "In 2021, I mass consumed films to seek solace from pandemic blues. I came across an unheard film from the depths of Mubi archives, titled Patang. The heart and soul put into capturing the urban neighbourhood of Ahmedabad during the signature kite festival stayed with me ever since. This illustration is an ode to the very same built fabric of Ahmedabad, expressed in a raw depiction of textures and levels and sprinkled with vibrant kites all around.
The role of space in community interaction, festivities and family dynamics intrigued me. An expansive skyline view of the multi-levelled terraces, vernacular walls of these heritage residences called pols, and the close-knit built environment was so candidly expressed in the film, that it was a joy to connect with it. It felt like I was briefly in in the city amongst the enthusiastic folks bonding over kites. Thank You, Prashant Bhargava, for exposing us to this beautiful culture with such a candid story. Rest in Peace."
