Artist Statement: "Modernism when deciphered right within the rich Indian context, bears some fruitful architectural results. In this case, the Life Insurance Corporation Housing might be one of the less discussed projects in BV Doshi’s oeuvre, a most effective creation of affordable housing in the sub-continent. It really caught my eye at first glance, primarily due to its grounded approach as well as its empathetic design. Doshi reversed the conventional hierarchy and placed the larger rooms on the ground floor, while the smaller units were placed on top to accommodate socio-cultural flexibility. This introduced flexibility; allowed the ability to transform spaces, especially for the lower economic class, thereby establishing their sense of belonging with the space.
A multi-residential housing complex 'Bima Nagar' is a sub-portion of the LIC Housing complex. The symmetrical staircase and stacking of blocks were a simple yet fascinating exhibition of form, creating an interactive space playing a part in keeping communities close-knitted. The noticeable absence of human figures in this illustration (except the signature bicycle going past the house) is intentional in order to allow the viewer’s head to play out their own narratives; a flexibility Doshi himself intended to emphasize. As an artist and architect marvelling at this creation, I could imagine a documentary film playing out inside my head with the soothing instrumentals of Malgudi Days pulling me into the scene. Family members sit on the steps and converse, neighbours share stories, and kids play in the foreground. How do you see this space?"
