Sreya Samanta
Garden of Time Kantha Saree
SIlk, Kantha embroidery
Saree length: 5.5 m + 90 cms running blouse piece with embroidered sleeves (see 2nd image)
>
A statement saree, featuring the most eclectic Garden of Time (almost like the Met-Gala 2024) in royal blue. The Saree, etched in traditional Kantha and other embroidery techniques, is rich with a painterly quality, so that the embroidery actually resembles a miniature painting. Multi-coloured rocks in fantastic shapes yield a profusion of magical flora, delicately carved birds flutter, star and heart shaped leaves float in the breeze, along with dainty flowers: a magical world indeed!
Richly embroidered in the palla, and pleats; the Saree embodies months of painstaking work by women artisans of Bengal.

Sreya Samanta: Bengal weaves reimagined
Well known for her experiments with Kantha embroidery traditions of Bengal, Samanta develops a quirky take on the tradition by creating contemporary narratives with the craft; also revelling in atypical Saree compositions. Her Jamdani experiments also see the designer drawing from the traditional repertoire of the colour palettes and weaving tradition, as well as adding new iterations to it. Samanta invests extensively in yarn development, and works in only the finest and softest of Bengal khadi cotton and silk fabrics (it is only in Bengal that Khadi achieves such a soft mul-like texture and the designer harnesses that beautifully.)

Care: Dry clean only.
