Artist’s Statement:
I have been fascinated with Tarp, the humble street-side material, and its omnipresent nature in Mumbai, especially during the Monsoon. On midnight walks, I collected old fragmented pieces (sometimes carpets) of tarp; begging street-side shop vendors to sell me their old tarp! Gradually this humble, tattered material became my muse for many art explorations...
Tattered, torn, destroyed tarpaulin collected in suburban Mumbai, perhaps representing the grittier aspects of the city; is overlaid with gold and silver foil; creating abstract works in the city of golden and silver dreams.
The material, though made of synthetic yarn is akin to textile in its weaving structure: as it wears, it reveals the warp and the weft, also showing us layers of gritty textures and colours.
