Chamunda is a fearsome form of Chandi or Durga, often linked to Kali and is seen as one of the seven Matrikas and 64 yoginis (she being the chief Yogini). She’s associated with the battle-ground, death and disease. Prominent features in her depiction include the typical rotting, withered form; the scorpion as her belly button, smeared in fresh blood; she has flames for hair. Her vahan is a Pishach/Preta, Shava (corpse) or a Lion. In this work, she is depicted as a form of calamity, consuming humans.

Abhijeet Roy is a self taught artist with Bengali roots and a sharp inclination towards Shakta traditions and Tantra, that are the major inspirations depicted in a contemporary art style in his work. He has been making art since childhood, working with watercolour as the primary medium. His artworks are personal artistic expressions of the Tantra, Sri Vidya and Shakta theology traditions.
